TCU Women's small bore team, 2008
Aloha Invitational Matches (AIM 2009) on Friday, February 27, 2009 at
the Saint Louis High School rifle range.
Hawaii Friends of NRA (Hawaii FNRA) has provided the announcement
below. Established four years ago by Heather Horn and high school
rifle team students and guided by Co-Chairman Audy Kimura and
Treasurer Dawn Horn, these young competitors have re-energized high
school shooting sports in Hawaii.
The two things our nation needs most to protect our gun rights
are: 1) public recognition that civilian possession of firearms is
socially acceptable and, 2) young people who will carry on that
ethic. Their programs do both for Hawaii, like nothing else in our
State. In these days when "high school shooting" means Columbine to
lots of Americans, we owe these young people and the Friends of NRA
programs an enormous mahalo. Please support their efforts by
attending the match, potluck awards dinner, or sending a small
contribution toward the cost operating the tournament to Hawaii FNRA,
129 South Kalaheo Ave., Kailua, HI 96734.
Hawaii FNRA thanks Harvey Gerwig and HRA for helping coordinate with
HPD to "pre-register" the college athletes' Olympic smallbore rifles
making it possible to have a "real" legitimate NCAA competition with
Smallbore and Air Rifle, not just an air-only exhibition match. KHNL
TV news has arranged for sports coverage.
Match Program: The finest in NCAA college rifle competition makes a
rare appearance in Hawaii as the Falcon cadets of the US Air Force
Academy take on the Wolf Pack of the University of Nevada and the
Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University (TCU) at the Aloha
Invitational Matches (AIM 2009) on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the
Saint Louis High School rifle range. Coached by 1992 Olympic Gold
Medalist and three time world record holder Launi Meili, the Falcons
bring a talented young team including three time Ohio State Smallbore
Champion Mike Seery who attended the 2007 NRA National Advanced
Junior Shooting Camp in Hawaii. (Freshman team member Waipahu
resident Sarah Martin, a 2008 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy,
didn't make the cut to travel with the team this year, but this looks
like an annual affair.) Finishing third in Air Rifle at the 2008
NCAA Championships, the Nevada Wolf Pack Rifle Team brings home
Hawaii's 2004 Girls State Air Rifle Champion, Heather Horn. Joining
Heather in his first island match will be teammate Dempster
Christenson, current Men's Rifle Junior Olympic National Champion and
member of the US National Development Team. Kaneohe girl Simone
Riford (center, photo above), the 2005 Hawaii Girls State Air Rifle
Champion, leads an exciting and talent packed all female TCU team
featuring US National Development Team member Erin Lorenzen, the 2007
Women's Rifle Junior National Champion. Claiming the bronze medal in
Smallbore rifle and an overall third place finish at last year's NCAA
Championship, TCU will host the NCAA Rifle Championships in Fort
Worth, Texas next month. Competition will begin with .22 caliber
Olympic style smallbore matches at 9AM followed by precision Air
Rifle matches. The afternoon Air Rifle relay beginning at 3:30 PM
will be open to the public. A pot luck awards dinner where you can
meet the teams and coaches will be held on Saturday, February 28th,
at 6:00PM in the Punahou Air Rifle range. Please call Hawaii Friends
of NRA at 225-7873 for public viewing instructions. Please spread the
word to your club and team members. This is a great opportunity to
show our support and hospitality for our visiting college athletes,
see some excellent shooting, and learn more about college and Olympic
style shooting sports. High School Air Rifle Team members are
encouraged to attend. Volunteers for scoring and donations for the
potluck awards dinner are welcomed.
Mahalo for your support,
Dawn R. Horn, Hawaii Friends of NRA
